Prof. Akshay Kelkar- Journey back to Home!

Image
I would like this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Akshay Kelkar and I have joined the Department of Geology as assistant professor. I’m an alumnus of this college and belong to the batch of 2014-15. I got my bachelor of science degree from this institute with Geology as my major subject. Further, I went to Goa University to pursue my Master’s degree in Applied Geology, which I completed in the April of 2017. I have always been fond of geology, when college finally received autonomy status, I always envied the students who will be joining under autonomy as they could opt for their favourite subject for all the three years to come. But fate had something else stored up for me, while dreaming to be a student under autonomy structure and also trying to be a teacher for my classmates during last moments of exams, who knew coin will flip and reality will bring me back to the very same places as a teacher of an autonomous institute. To tell about myself, I love to

Focus on Alumni

Image
Statistics Compiled by: Ajay Terdalker, Jocelyn Fernandes, Evania Dia s The Department of Geology was founded in 1981 by Prof S M Borges, It was a very humble beginning with the first batch comprising of only 5 students and since then department has witnessed several ups and downs in its student strength however the overall trend has been encouraging with more than 20 students enrolled at First year since 1991 with a record no of 53 in the year 1990-2000. Post attaining autonomy the Department still continues to thrive, this can be attribute to the fact that students find Geology very fascinating and it also reflects on the efforts put in by the Department over the years to satisfy the interest of the students with respect to learning the subject by organising various activities such as Fieldtrips, to better acquaint the students with practical knowledge apart from classroom teaching. The Department have over the years produced several graduates who have gone ahead and achiev

Geology news: India's Women Geologists are Rocking it.

Image
A hammer and a compass in hand, India’s women geologists are just rocking it. Women geologists of the Geological Survey of India have proved that women are not less than men and are carving out their success stories. About 40% of the total workforce of GSI is women. Forty year old, Kasturi Chakraborty, a petrologist says, “it is a good time for women to choose geology as their career. Earlier, women were mostly associated with lab work in geology. Now the mindset has changed and we are seeing more and more women on the field”. Arya Ghosh, whose interest in the field was sparked by Sudipta Sengupta, one of the first Indian women to visit Antarctica on an expedition, makes it a point to inform local police of their work in a particular area. She was also courageous enough to complete a project in Nayagarh District in Odisha that had been abandoned due to extremist violence. “I love to do this so I don’t view them as obstacles, says Ghosh, who works in metamorphic petrology.

Geology news: Discovery of Zealandia-Is it the 8th continent?

Image
As we know, Earth has a thin outer layer called crust that is broken into several plates called lithospheric or tectonic plates. Continents are the demarcations on these plates recognised by humans for their convenience. Geologists and geographers don’t entirely agree on what actually makes a continent: for a geographer, Europe and Asia are two separate entities, while geologists lump them together as ‘Eurasia’. By convention, our planet has seven continents, but there’s no international body or committee that decrees which landmasses of the Earth’s crust should be defined as such. This is what researchers are currently proposing. According to their latest analysis, Zealandia is a 4.9 million-square- kilometre expanse of continental crust that’s 94% underwater, with only New Zealand and New Caledonia sitting above the ocean surface. Researchers have been gathering data on this continental crust for the past 10 years to formally put forward a scientific case for the continen

Achiever speaks: Ms Satyam Sadekar

Image
Ms Satyam Sadekar, B.Sc Geology Topper at Goa University First time when I came to the department and saw the list of the geology toppers I visualised my name appearing in the list for 2016-17 batch. I had been constantly trying to reach my goal which I set on that day and by the grace of God I could do it. And obviously I am very happy about it! From day one I planned each day such that enough time was given for study .I managed my studies with all other activities .As I loved this subject which is very interesting I always paid attention in class. The most important part is that I have always been very attentive in the lectures and made sure that I didn't miss a single lecture. As of now I'm only concentrating on my master's and I would like to get a doctorate in this subject . My goal is to achieve the maximum knowledge in this subject. Chowgules has been a blessing to me not only in the field of geology but also for my overall development. This college

ROLE OF ALUMNI

Image
Every year we have tens of students who graduate from our geology department , nurtured, bread and moulded under the guidance of their mentors they are ready to navigate into the challenging world that awaits them ahead in their life. We proudly call them our alumni, an alumni for us is any pupil who has spent considerable time learning/teaching in our educational institution, be it former students or teachers. In leading institutions world over the alumni of the respective organizations have joined hands to form alumni associations. Alumni associations function in many areas for the upliftment of their clan and in turn the upliftment of their alma mater. In this article I am going to shed light on a few roles of alumni as a major stakeholder in the development and upliftment of their alma mater. College strategic level representations: as members of Board of Studies, Admission ambassadors. Role model and Inspiration : Successful alumni are often looked upon as potential rol

Alumni Speaks : Ms Anisha Verencar (2017 batch)- A glimpse of my experience in the Department of Geology.

Image
If I could go back in time and speak to my much younger self when I was first asked the question “what has been your best experience?” the baby faced version of me would be surprised by what my answer is now……..Like many of my classmates I came to the Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science because I desired a college experience that would challenge me. My first day in the Department-Yeah! I remember it perfectly….Professor Nadkarni, H.O.D. addressed us with a warm smile. His expertise and clarity was the first to pique my interest in this field. However it was only after my first field visit to the highlands of Polem and Palolem that set in stone the fact that this was the path I wanted to take! One of my most cherished memory in this college is Nebula 2015. It gave me the opportunity to interact with students from various universities in and out of Goa. This brought about a realization to learn the subject beyond college academics. It was after this event that I contem
