NCAOR VISIT

STUDENTS ALONG WITH FACULTY MEMBERS AT NCAOR, VASCO.

The students of SYBSc accompanied by Assistant Professor Malcolm Afonso visited National
Centre For Antarctic And Ocean Research (NCAOR) on 4th of October 2017.

On arrival at NCAOR the students were welcomed and briefed on the works done by NCAOR by Dr. Swati Nagar, After that the students got an opportunity to meet and talk to Dr Rahul Mohan, HOD- Antarctic Science and he is also doing his current research activities in the field of Marine Geology. He asked the students about their interest in geology and enlightened them by sharing his knowledge with them.

Later, a session was taken by Dr. Mahesh B.S , Research Scientist on the topic 'Paleoclimatology'.
He briefed the students about the ancient weather and helped them understanding past climate. He also explained to them how scientist study climate i.e satellites, historical proxy record, instrument record and ancient proxy record- for example, tree rings, ice corers,coral reefs etc. He also shared
with the students about his expedition experience in Antarctica.

After the session the students were taken to the Scanning electron microscope (SEM) laboratory
and followed by mobile lab where thin sections are prepared of rocks, we were demonstrated the working of the instrument and different processes involved to prepare a thin section of the rocks. The students were guided by the scientists at the NCAOR.
