Field Trip to Palolem, Goa

Image
On our geological field trip on April 8 2021, through the western coast of Goa in India under the guidance of Prof. Malcolm Afonoso and Prof. Swati Ghadi, we visited impressive rock formations, volcanic intrusions, geomorphic characteristics as well as windy climate zone of Palolem Beach facing the Arabian Sea. Elevation of Palolem village is only 5 meters above sea level. The formations that we visited were right on the coast of the village. Consequently, the local summer weather remained unwavering throughout the time of our surveying, and the cloudless blue sky brought up the hot temperatures under the scorching sun.  In the course of our visit to the study area, Prof. Malcolm explained us the objectives of the field work and briefed us about the area.He spoke about the geological and topographical setting of the beach in Palolem, and also about the clinometer compass that we used to find the dip and trends of the rock structures.   Our field trip started at around 8.30 AM in the mo

With the aim to impart skill based education, the Department of Geology is proud to initiate two Skill enhancement courses ( SEC) that are implemented from the academic year 2020-2021.   In the third semester the course title “ Operational Geology ” was offered. This course is divide into 2 sections, the first section conducted by Assistant Professor, Swati Ghadi, is based on Data management using Microsoft Excel. This section is designed in response to the received alumni feedback. Both as students and as working professional, it is observed that a basic knowledge of working with MS Excel is a

Department of Geology to launch a new community driven project titled "Geology of Goa"

Geology of Goa has been a subject of intense study during the past, several noted geologist have worked and mapped the geological resources of Goa. There is a vast literature already published on the subject with beautiful description and a few photographs of the outcrops. It is noted that most of the work was done several decades earlier when the use of technology such as GIS was not very widespread as it is today. Any newcomer who wishes to study these outcrops almost certainly has to painstakingly scan the terrain using only the descriptions and guidance of fellow colleagues to find the locations of outcrops given in the literature. This process is tedious and unnecessary if the location of these stratotypes are geotagged and stored in a database. This will allow the future geologists to save a lot of their precious time to focus on the analysis of their study rather than data gathering. Therefore there is a need to revisit these outcrops from which the Geology of Goa has been
