Introduction of new Skill Enhancement Courses

With the advent of Atmanirbhar Bharat and the reforms coming into the education system, more and more emphasis is being laid on skill enhancement.  Providing  Skill based education not only gives the student an advantage of learning an additional skill set but in a way it conditions the minds to think practically and creatively, thereby sparks curiosity to explore various options for themselves.

With the aim to impart skill based education, the Department of Geology is proud to initiate two Skill enhancement courses ( SEC) that are implemented from the academic year 2020-2021.

In the third semester the course title “ Operational Geology” was offered. This course is divide into 2 sections, the first section conducted by Assistant Professor, Swati Ghadi, is based on Data management using Microsoft Excel. This section is designed in response to the received alumni feedback. Both as students and as working professional, it is observed that a basic knowledge of working with MS Excel is a highly desired skill.  So in this section we cover Excel basics and data analysis using excel tools, but focus has been on explaining the structure of  drill hole database and how the data can be managed using MS Excel. This skill is used by exploration geologist involved in drilling operations.

The second section is based on Gemology, conducted by Dr Meghana Devli.  Gemmology is the science dealing with various variety of natural and artificial gemstone . The word gemology is a hybrid word formed from the Latin word ‘Gemma” meaning gem and Greek word ‘Logos’ meaning science . This section is designed to introduce the students to the study of gemstones, the role of geologist in gemology, mode of occurrence of gemstones, factors affecting the cost of gemstones and instrumentation for identifying varieties of gemstones. This skill would be very valuable especially if one aspires to get into the gemstone industry.

In Semester IV,  we are offering SEC titled “GIS for Beginners”. This course is conducted by Assistant Professor, Malcolm Afonso. The objective of this course is to impart GIS training in spatial data visualization techniques, Creating Geospatial datasets, Working with mobile Global Positioning System (GPS) data, tabular data, and raster data, Accessing open source data, Visual image interpretation, Terrain analysis. The course starts with basics of GIS and covers advance sections involving practical exercises, where the student applies the theory and works using open source software on actual data available on public domain. GIS integrates many types of data and therefore can be used for various applications. It gives deeper insights into data which can enable users make smarter decisions.
