Mission


The programme in Geology is designed keeping in mind the current job prospects and trends in research by offering knowledge-based papers in Mineralogy, Petrology, Stratigraphy, and Structural Geology and skill-based papers in Groundwater, Petroleum geology, Remote Sensing and Digital Image Processing, Surveying and Field Geology and Mining Geology.

The curriculum focuses on exposing the students to classroom presentations and laboratory sessions wherein they are trained to identify minerals and thereby rocks; analyse geological maps by drawing cross-sections and solve structural problems on various geological aspects.

The department endeavours to make use of the best practices in teaching by continuously upgrading its teaching methodologies and by integrating Information and Communication Technologies(ICT) Tools to aid teaching and learning. ICT Tools such as Google Classroom, Padlet, Edpuzzle, YouTubeetc. are used. The department strives to make learning enjoyable and effective by adopting the collaborative classroom approach wherever possible. Collaborative classroom strategies such as Team-Pair-Solo, Round Robin, Four Corners, Three-Step-Interview etc. are used in addition to regular debates, Group projects (Field based), Poster presentations etc.

The department has experienced faculty to provide sound knowledge in the subjects of Mineralogy, Petrology, Stratigraphy and Structural Geology. Laboratory is well equipped with Petrological Microscopes, Gemstone testing equipment, field equipment, sedimentological analytical kit, as well as a rich collection of minerals, rocks, fossils and gemstones will help in correlating theoretical with practical knowledge. Field visits are conducted every even semester to areas of geological interest within and outside state of Goa to enable them to relate classroom understanding to observations in the field. Internship opportunities are provided at research institutes like National Centre for Antarctica and Ocean Research (NCAOR), National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), mining companies like Vedanta, companies dealing with ground water investigationlike Dip Direction Company etc.

Further, regular visits are organised to reputed research institutes wherein students are expected to interact with geoscientists and geologists to enhance their knowledge.
The department organizes an annual national level intercollegiate geological event “Nebula” for students of Geology across India. This event provides a common platform to interact with students of Geology from other institutes. Student Club- NEBULITES regularly conducts quizzes, debates, student seminars etc. Lecture series by geoscientists from research institutes of repute, geologists from mining companies, and teaching faculties from other institutes are organised for the students to update themselves with current trends.

Students undertaking this course can pursue their Post-graduate studies in the subject to become qualified geologists /geoscientists. Through internship in marine research, ground water studies, geotechnical and mining projects a student will get exposed to the current requirements and needs of the industry.

A student intending to graduate in Geology is expected to possess a sound knowledge in associated disciplines of Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Inquisitiveness and good analytical skills are highly desirable for him/her to make detailed observations and correct interpretations. As the subject is field based, a good stamina to carry out rigorous outdoor field work, and his/herability to apply the classroom knowledge to field observations will be the stand out factors to make him/her a successful geologist/geoscientist.

WORKSHOP ON GIS

The Department of Geology organized a two day GIS workshop entitled “Learn to create your first map”. The workshop was held on 23 rd and 24 th of January 2018. The workshop was conducted by Assistant Professor Malcolm Afonso. Students of S.Y.Bsc and T.Y.Bsc from the Department of Geology participated in the workshop. The workshop was designed with a focus on imparting basic knowledge of GIS using two of the major open source GIS platforms which are QGIS and Google Earth Pro. Students were taught to digitize and prepare their own maps using data from a variety of sources including, Toposheets, GPS Surveys, Google Maps, Bhuvan portal etc. Contributor : Rizlen Quadros

Visit ONGC Ipshem at Betul, Goa on 24th July 2019

As part of the curriculum in Petroleum Geology, the TYBSc geology students, accompanied by Asst. Prof. Mrs Swati Ghadi visited ONGC IPSHEM at Betul, Goa on   24th July 2019, for getting exposure to the work environment associated with the petroleum Industry. The ONGC unit at Betul is an I nstitute for P etroleum S afety, H ealth and E nvironment M anagement and conducts various safety training programmes for employees working on site. They also carry out Research and Development for environmental protection. The visit was organized under  DBT  Star College Scheme.

Induction of the committee of Club Nebulites by the Geology Department

On 6 th August 2019, the Department of Geology - Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science – conducted the Induction of the Club Nebulites Committee. Our chief guests of honour Dr. Antonio Mascarenhas, a retired scientist from NIO, and Mr. Abhijeet Prabhudessai, member of the NGO – Rainbow Warriors, were warmly welcomed. Dr. Antonio Mascarenhas and Sir. Harish Nadkarni, HOD of the Department unveiled and inaugurated the new department logo designed by Samuel Afonso from TY BSc Geology and his cousin Jeremy Afonso which symbolises a new beginning and vision for the Department followed by recognition of the committee members by displaying their achievements and distributing their respective badges.
