Visit to National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) and State Geology Museum housed at Goa University.



The  students of SYBSc accompanied by Assistant Professor Malcolm Afonso visited National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) and State Geology Museum housed at Goa University, Earth Science Department on 23rd of August 2017. 

At NIO they were briefed on the International Indian Ocean Expedition and also on the two ships that are used by NIO for ocean research- Sindhu Sankalp and Sindhu Sadhana. The students got an opportunity to interact with the scientists working at NIO. They were taken to various  labs and demonstrated the working of various equipments e g. Sediment Particle Size Analyser, Core logger, Marine Sediment Samplers etc. Students also got to see various marine sediments samples such as Metal Sulphides, Polymettalic Nodules, Phosphatic Nodules, Fossils and Artifacts recovered from shipwrecks. They were guided by the scientists from NIO. 

Later for  the afternoon session students visited the State Geology museum at Goa University. Professor Anthony Viegas explained each and every specimen very enthusiastically to the students.  The museum houses many different variety of rock samples from around the globe, in addition to gemstones and fossil collection. Students were also taken for a tour of the surface water runoff harvesting system installed at Goa university.

 This visit to NIO and Goa University was very helpful for the students.
