ROLE OF ALUMNI
Every year we have tens of students who graduate from our geology department , nurtured, bread and moulded under the guidance of their mentors they are ready to navigate into the challenging world that awaits them ahead in their life. We proudly call them our alumni, an alumni for us is any pupil who has spent considerable time learning/teaching in our educational institution, be it former students or teachers. In leading institutions world over the alumni of the respective organizations have joined hands to form alumni associations. Alumni associations function in many areas for the upliftment of their clan and in turn the upliftment of their alma mater. In this article I am going to shed light on a few roles of alumni as a major stakeholder in the development and upliftment of their alma mater.
College strategic level representations: as members of Board of Studies, Admission ambassadors.
Role model and Inspiration: Successful alumni are often looked upon as potential role models and inspiration by their juniors.
Career Mentors: Having experienced their respective field of work inside-out alumni are in a best position to give career advice to freshers, who often are not aware or misguided about the perks and demands of works in a particular field.
Sharing their expertise: Alumni take up various challenging jobs and some may end up in an altogether emerging field of work unheard off in the textbooks, such alumni could offer their expertise in the form of Guest lectures, Consultants and Collaborative Researchers.
Student internship/recruitment: Having attained a position of power or influence in their organization an alumni could support student internships and assist fresh graduates to find employment.
Support the department's reputation: The views and positive statements influence the public perception of the department.
Fundraising: For the many great ideas and initiatives of the department, lack of funds often becomes a hindrance. There are several areas where funds are required in order to take up meaningful initiatives such as.
- Research funding for procuring latest equipments and technology.
- Support departmental students club activities (e.g. Nebula- a state level geology competition organized by our students)
- Student scholarships
- Awards for meritorious students
On a concluding note we consider our alumni as a unique stakeholder in the development and growth of the department, the potential of which is yet to be completely explored therefore we welcome all our alumni to engage with the department and give back to the institute.
