Alumni Speaks - Shravan Prabhu, Geospatial Consultant

Shravan Prabhu, 2020 batch, Department of Geology, Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science- Autonomous, Margao, Goa.

My name is Shravan Prabhu. I have persuaded my Master’s degree in Geospatial Technology from the Symbiosis Institute of Geoinformatics, Pune, and a Bachelor’s in Geology from Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science.

Currently, I am working with the Climate Risks and Adaptation team at CEEW. The Council on Energy, Environment, and Water (CEEW) is one of Asia’s leading not-for-profit policy research institutions. CEEW is ranked as South Asia’s top think tank (15th globally). At the council, my work primarily revolves around integrated data analysis by leveraging GIS and remote sensing techniques that help design robust climate risk assessment and mitigation tools, which in turn would develop partnerships with public and private institutions, and engages with the wider public.

The field of GIS and remote sensing is relatively new in India, but it is growing on an unprecedented scale. Data is said to be the new oil, and rightfully so. And almost every data now has spatial information associated with it, which in turn helps in deriving an integrated robust analysis.

The latest IPCC reports and climate scientists highlight one thing, i.e. “we are running out of time”. Other than mitigating the climate change risks, adaptation needs to play a major role as well. I envision a future when institutions, infrastructure, economies, and people are insulated from the risks of a changing climate. India and many other developing countries are the most.  We need to apply the principles of risk assessment to climate change, broadening participation in the climate risk assessment process and reporting to the highest decision-making authorities at the national and international levels. I seek to pursue a career where I can combine my two passions- technology and public policy, to drive an impact at scale.
