BOOK RELEASE: GEOLOGY AND MINERAL RESOURCES OF GOA

The Geological Society of Goa (GSG) organised a function on 28th January 2018 for the release of the book titled “Geology and Mineral Resources of Goa” authored by Prof. Ashoka G. Dessai, Former Head of Earth Science Department, Goa University at the hands of Prof. Sunil Kumar Singh, Director, CSIR – NIO. The event witnessed presence of several distinguished professionals from various fields of Geology including Founder president of GSG, Shri Anil Nadkarni, Shri. F. B. Antao, Dr. K Mahender, Dr. T. Viswanath, Shri. R. P. Gurav.

The Chief Guest, Prof. Sunil Kumar Singh expressed his profound satisfaction on the release of a comprehensive book on Geology of Goa. He also emphasized on the requirement of the book to the students of Geology and the geology fraternity in Goa. He urged the gathering that it’s time to seek other sources of Mineral resources rather than the traditional ones, including the laterites, ocean basins, etc.

After the formal release of the book, Dr. Anthony Viegas, Secretary, GSG and Associate Professor, Earth Science Department, Goa University gave a review of the book. He said that Dr. Dessai has brought to bear his research acumen combined with his professional teaching experience in this book. He said that it is a comprehensive book that can be use to students, researchers and planners. He also mentioned that the colour photographs along with the sketches and maps enhance the value of book.

The author of the book Prof. A. G. Dessai shared his experiences writing a book of this stature. He mentioned about the students who would ask him for references on the topic Geology of Goa and this gave him an urge to write the book. He also shared about his discussions with different experienced geologists from Geological Survey of India for their view on the new stratigraphic classification of rocks in Goa and the difficulties he faced while gathering the evidences in reviewing the existing literature. In his address, Prof. Dessai, stressed up on the importance of the various rare earth elements present in laterites and also motivated the younger geologists to take up research on Laterites as an alternative for the economic stability of the State.

The Department of Geology organized a two day GIS workshop entitled “Learn to create your first map”. The workshop was held on 23 rd and 24 th of January 2018. The workshop was conducted by Assistant Professor Malcolm Afonso. Students of S.Y.Bsc and T.Y.Bsc from the Department of Geology participated in the workshop. The workshop was designed with a focus on imparting basic knowledge of GIS using two of the major open source GIS platforms which are QGIS and Google Earth Pro. Induction of the committee of Club Nebulites by the Geology Department

On 6 th August 2019, the Department of Geology - Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science – conducted the Induction of the Club Nebulites Committee. Our chief guests of honour Dr. Antonio Mascarenhas, a retired scientist from NIO, and Mr. Abhijeet Prabhudessai, member of the NGO – Rainbow Warriors, were warmly welcomed. Dr. Antonio Mascarenhas and Sir. Harish Nadkarni, HOD of the Department unveiled and inaugurated the new department logo designed by Samuel Afonso from TY BSc Geology and his cousin Jeremy Afonso which symbolises a new beginning and vision for the Department followed by recognition of the committee members by displaying their achievements and distributing their respective badges. Visit ONGC Ipshem at Betul, Goa on 24th July 2019

As part of the curriculum in Petroleum Geology, the TYBSc geology students, accompanied by Asst. Prof. Mrs Swati Ghadi visited ONGC IPSHEM at Betul, Goa on   24th July 2019, for getting exposure to the work environment associated with the petroleum Industry. The ONGC unit at Betul is an I nstitute for P etroleum S afety, H ealth and E nvironment M anagement and conducts various safety training programmes for employees working on site. They also carry out Research and Development for environmental protection. The visit was organized under  DBT  Star College Scheme.
