Geology news: India's Women Geologists are Rocking it.

A hammer and a compass in hand, India’s women geologists are just rocking it. Women
geologists of the Geological Survey of India have proved that women are not less than men and
are carving out their success stories.
About 40% of the total workforce of GSI is women. Forty year old, Kasturi Chakraborty, a
petrologist says, “it is a good time for women to choose geology as their career. Earlier, women
were mostly associated with lab work in geology. Now the mindset has changed and we are
seeing more and more women on the field”.
Arya Ghosh, whose interest in the field was sparked by Sudipta Sengupta, one of the first Indian
women to visit Antarctica on an expedition, makes it a point to inform local police of their work
in a particular area. She was also courageous enough to complete a project in Nayagarh District
in Odisha that had been abandoned due to extremist violence. “I love to do this so I don’t view
them as obstacles, says Ghosh, who works in metamorphic petrology.
Ghosh points out the misconception that girls are not capable enough to handle some physically
demanding projects that still exist in some cases.
Raychaudhuri another geologist is encouraging youngsters to go out more and explore nature.
