Founder Speaks.......

Mr. Sabestiao Mariano Borges is the founder of the Geology Department of Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science which was founded in 1980.

Student: Sir, at the time when you started the department can you tell us in brief about the geology labs, students and working conditions. What things were brought in the labs? How were they different from today?
Borges Sir: There was only one classroom- a big hall. As time passed, rocks and other small and big instruments like microscopes, compass, fossils were brought.
The very first batch consisted of only 5 students. The second batch consisted of 3 students.
Sir Nadkarni also taught along with me and later sir Katti joined.

Student: In which year was the department formed? And how many years did you teach?
Borges Sir: The department was founded in 1981 and I taught for 22 years, for 1981-2003.

Student: A lot of time has passed since you were in Chowgules. Tell us something about your experience in Chowgules.
Borges Sir: Yes, it was very good being in Chowgules. I taught there and besides teaching I also gained lots of knowledge. I would love to tell you’ll another thing- we did a lot of field work. We used to go for field work on every Sunday. We discovered and studied a lot. Not just Goa but we even went out of Goa. Whenever you go for field studies always carry a letter from the department or the HOD. Field work is important and helpful because whenever we go out in the field, we get to see an image in 3D and can recall whatever we learned.

Student: Sir, what are you doing now? Are you still into teaching?
Borges Sir: No, I am out of Geology. Now I am into this Konkani “Gulab” which is a magazine.

Student: What message would you give to our budding geologists from the department?

Borges Sir: Concentrate on what you do and go ahead. Don’t be afraid of your mistakes and always learn from those mistakes.
